Pool Rules
The rules aren't on the YMCA website. Here is a list, it's pretty extensive...
Since this is considered a "special event", the ratio of 15 Swimmers to each lifeguard will be enforced. There are 2 Lifeguards scheduled in addition to one pool supervisor (max – 30 children at one time).
The ramp and basin will be open and the lap lanes will be used only for swim tests, those who pass will not have to wear the life vest.
SWIM SAFELY
The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable pool experience for all. All children 12 and under must participate in a swimming skills assessment and will be provided a green or red swim band for that day. These bands assist our certified lifeguards in keeping all our swimmers safe. Lifeguards will gladly conduct one swim assessment per child per day. The YMCA reserves the right to test all swimmers regardless of age.
TEST
PLUNGE: Swimmer jumps in designated area of water that is over their head and easily returns to the surface; TREAD: Swimmer must tread water for a minimum of 30 seconds while keeping their ears and face above water; SWIM: Swimmer continues to swim the entire length of the pool (20-50 yards depending on pool size and lifeguard discretion) unassisted and without resting.
Swimmer maintains a horizontal body position.
MARK: Swimmers that pass the assessment will be provided with a green swim band and will be given access to all areas of the pool. Non-swimmers who do not take or pass the swim assessment will be provided with a red wrist band and limited to the shallow end only.
PROTECT
Non-Swimmers must participate in a vest check conducted by the lifeguard. The top of the vest check pole must be at or below the child’s nipple line or the child must be placed in a YMCA provided, U.S. Coast Guard approved life vest and remain in the shallow end of the pool
